Cowper leading the way in tackling weed scourge

Federal Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan says property owners across Cowper could see the development of innovative and new technologies to help them fight established weeds in remote areas of their properties.

This follows a $589,525 Federal Government grant to Charles Sturt University and Local Land Services North Coast.

CSU and its partners were one of 19 successful projects of the $13 million Advancing Pest Animal and Weed Control Solutions Competitive Grant Round announced this week.

“The aim of this program is to research and advance breakthrough solutions to control of some of our worst established pest animals and weeds, including fall armyworm and prickly acacia,” Mr Conaghan said.

“Technologies could be adapted to control other pest and weed species, providing a broader suite of control options for integrated pest and weed management

“Grant round projects will also assist in overcoming emerging issues such as herbicide resistance and provide more effective alternatives for controlling pests such as hive beetles.

“Our native species will also benefit through a reduction in pest and weeds that predate and/or compete for resources.”

Mr Conaghan said the grant will help CSU and its nine project partners to deliver significant benefits for farmers, the environment and rural and regional communities.

The successful grant will focus on weed managers guide to remote detection. Understanding opportunities and limitations of multi-resolution and multi-modal technologies for remote detection of weeds in heterogeneous landscapes.
