Cowper MP presents Saluting Their Service certificates to World War II veteran’s son

Federal Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan has presented Macksville’s John Baker a certificate recognising his mother’s World War II service.

Elvira Ellsmore served with her unit in Townsville as a telephone operator for around two years.

Mr Conaghan said he was pleased to be able to present John with the posthumous certificates.

“It is important we remember our service personnel that helped protect us during times of conflict,” he said.

John said he was proud to accept the certificates on behalf of his family.

“Mum served for about two years with her main unit in Townsville,” he said.

“She was only discharged to give birth to me in 1945.

“Dad was a US serviceman and mum a war bride. We eventually moved to the US where we spent about 10 years at various locations.

“These certificates mean a tremendous amount to me and the family,” he said.

Mr Conaghan said residents can apply for certificates acknowledging service for, veterans who served in the wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations where certificates are available or family members on behalf of a deceased eligible person.
