Cowper Pat Conaghan MP says the Federal Government has made it easier for States and Territories to request Federal Assistance including support from the Australian Defence Force in times of natural disasters.
Mr Conaghan said State and Territory Governments are primarily responsible for responding to natural disasters, including the landslide at Devils Nook, six kilometres east of Bellbrook.
The landslip started about 85 metres above the roadway and has taken out tonnes of rock and debris. Council engaged specialist Geotech engineers to inspect the site leading to the road’s closure on Monday January 4.
“Should it be required, the Federal Government has made it easier for States and Territories to request Federal assistance including support from the ADF,” he said.
“States and Territories will need to consider factors including their own capabilities and that of local contractors before making such a request.
“The Federal Government stands ready to provide assistance if required.”
Mr Conaghan visited the Bellbrook landslip site on Friday January 8 along with Kempsey Shire Council mayor Liz Campbell and general manager Craig Milburn.
It was expected that a SES helicopter would water-bomb the site during Friday to help remove potentially dangerous debris from the site.
The slip is still moving and very dangerous while there are several trees either balanced or still at risk of slipping.
Kempsey Shire Council has engaged specialist engineers will plan the most appropriate method for clearing and stabilising the site. However the site remains dangerous with unstable rocks and trees.
This landslip has impacted around 300 residents of Bellbrook and surrounding area. Kempsey Shire Council has organised with the SES for emergency supply drops each Wednesday and Friday.
Some 100kgs of urgent supplies of non-perishable goods or medications was airlifted earlier in the week. These items were delivered to the Elbow Street Recovery Hub and distributed through the Bellbrook Hotel.
