Have Your Say on New Rules to Protect Australians from Scams

30/11/2025

The Government has launched public consultation on the next stage of the Scams Prevention Framework, seeking input on which sectors should be subject to new mandatory anti-scam rules. As part of this process, a position paper has also been released outlining proposals for industry codes to combat scams more effectively.

Under the proposals, banks, telecommunications providers, and major online platforms – including social media companies, search engines, and messaging services – would be brought under a new set of standards designed to curb scam activity and better protect Australians. The consultation also explores how complaints should be managed.

I’ve appreciated the productive conversations I’ve had with Minister Mulino on these critical issues and look forward to continuing bipartisan efforts to protect Australians from scams.

At the end of the day, what matters for Australians is straightforward: are they being better protected, and are scam losses going down?

Unfortunately, the latest figures suggest we have more work to do. Since the Government legislated the Scams Framework earlier this year, Scamwatch has received over 159,000 scam reports, with losses totalling $260 million – a 16% increase compared to the previous year. Australians are losing more money to scammers, not less.

Behind these numbers are real people whose lives have been upended.

The Coalition remains committed to working constructively with the Government on practical, effective steps to protect Australians from scams and to reduce scam losses.
