Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams, Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey and Member for Cowper, Pat Conaghan today announced $17 million funding to fully upgrade Maria River Road between Port Macquarie and Crescent Head.
Funding for the upgrade has been secured through the Australian Government’s funding allocation of $191 million to build on the NSW Government’s $500 million Fixing Local Roads program, ensuring even more regional communities reap the benefits faster.
Mrs Williams said, “This was a funding commitment prior to the last State election and I am pleased to say the funding has now been allocated to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and Kempsey Council.
“I know that some concept planning has been carried out, but now both Councils can undertake full planning and design works on this critical project.
“For many years locals have been crying out for this road to be sealed and now their wishes will be delivered and I look forward to Councils getting on with the job,” Mrs Williams said.
Mrs Pavey said the project delivered on a pre-election commitment and would create a safer, smoother drive for locals and visitors.
“Kempsey Shire and Port Macquarie-Hastings Councils have done a lot of work in recent years on the costs, benefits and design aspects of sealing Maria River Road,” Mrs Pavey said.
“This funding will be used to help get this joint project underway and have this important road planned, designed and completed.”
Pat Conaghan said Maria River Road is an important link between Crescent Head and Port Macquarie.
“Growing up in the area we used to often use this road so I know how bumpy and rough it can be,” he said.
“I’m pleased the $1.5 billion our Government announced in early June for shovel-ready infrastructure projects is being rolled out now and a total of $451 million is going to New South Wales to support local jobs.”
