St Paul’s Catholic Secondary College at Kempsey wins prestigious award

St Paul’s Catholic Secondary College at Kempsey is one of just three vocational education and training (VET) providers across Australia to win an award at the 2020 Australian Training Awards.

St Paul’s Catholic Secondary College took out the School Pathways to VET Award on Friday night.

Federal Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan congratulated the secondary college for providing high-quality trades training to local youth.

“Since 2015, the college has expanded its vocational education program, offering engaging hands-on training in key areas such as construction, hospitality and primary production,” he said.

“Our Government is proud to support the VET sector, providing almost $7 billion in funding this year alone as part of our skills-led recovery from COVID-19.

“There are many different pathways our residents can take to achieve a fulfilling career and I thank St Paul’s Catholic Secondary College Principal Kevin Lewis for providing an important one to residents of the Macleay Valley.”

Minister for Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business, Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash, said the VET sector should be immensely proud of its achievements during a very challenging year.

“Despite the challenges of COVID-19, tonight’s Award recipients have demonstrated remarkable resilience,” Minister Cash said.

“They serve as leaders and role models to their peers and I know their stories will inspire others to consider a VET qualification.

“I congratulate each and every one of our winners and finalists.”

St Paul’s Catholic Secondary College won the School Pathways to VET award. Other organisations that won an Australian Training Award were South West Institute of TAFE in Victoria and Builders Academy Australia in Victoria.

St Paul’s Catholic Secondary College Principal Kevin Lewis said his college’s focus on establishing and maintaining stakeholder partnerships had been critical in winning the award.

“Our college’s Vocational Education and Training program for Years 11 and 12 students is highly admired and sought after,” he said.

“It offers students the opportunity to attain the nationally recognised and accredited qualification, Certificate II in Primary Industries, Hospitality or Construction as part of their regular Higher School Certificate study program.

“The course provides students with skills, training and qualifications that gives them a head start in their career or further training.”

The School Pathways to VET Award recognises eligible organisations including schools, registered training organisations group training organisations, industry bodies and employers that have collaboratively delivered one or more excellent VET programs to secondary school students.
