The job of ‘Leader of the Opposition’ is a tough and often thankless one. It demands resilience, discipline and an unwavering commitment to the national interest.
The leadership team must hold the government to account every single day — scrutinising legislation, challenging decisions and offering credible alternatives — while also uniting a diverse Party Room and presenting a clear vision for the country’s future. It is a role that requires strength under pressure, thick skin in the face of constant criticism, and the ability to make difficult decisions in the long-term interests of Australians.
I would like to congratulate my Liberal Party colleagues Angus Taylor and Jane Hume on their new leadership titles and thank former leaders Sussan Ley and Ted O’Brien for their significant contributions in the role.
Today’s announcement was a decision for the Liberal Party Room alone and I respect the individual choices of each Member and Senator. The Party has elected a new leadership team that they believe will drive the party forward into the next election and the National Party joins them in that ambition.
The confirmation this morning of these new titles should now bring to a close the weeks of media speculation and distraction.
It is now time for the Coalition to work as a unified team, determined not only to provide a formidable Opposition to Labor’s failing Government, but to represent our electorates and all Australians with acute focus and to the best of our ability. They deserve nothing less.
Sustainable cost-of-living support, responsible energy policy, housing affordability and putting an end to rampant inflation are at the top of our collective lists as a Coalition, and I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Joint Party Room on the policies that matter the most to the people of Australia.
And as the National Party, we will continue to ensure the needs and ideals of regional and rural people are at the forefront of every decision.
Now, let’s get on with the job!
